Parallels: Disney’s Pinocchio & Once Upon a Time S01E20

Pleasure Island

Many Disney fans were most likely able to identify many of the parallels shown throughout this episode and the movie we all know; such as Monstro, the Blue Fairy reviving Pinocchio, etc. Though, I believe the most significant parallel is also the most subtle one: pleasure island. In the movie, pleasure island is described as a refuge for boys to do what ever they want, break rules, smoke, fight, you name it. Pinocchio meets your typical rebellious boy who persuades him into temptation, guiding him away from what’s right. In OUAT, our world represents pleasure island, a place filled with temptation. The boy that persuaded August in the orphanage is the same as the boy who persuaded Pinocchio. In the movie, Pinocchio begins to transform into a donkey because he has lingered so far away from what’s right. This serves as a wake-up-call to get back on the right track and follow his conscience. August’s leg turning back to wood served the same purpose: a wake-up-call to go back and fulfill his promise in helping Emma break the curse.
